Solved:
I was running PCB over my VNC server and didn't realize it doesn't  
support OpenGL.  I cant even get Xming + putty to forward the PCB  
OpenGL either (although curiously glxgears works).  For now I'm using  
the "configure --disable-gl" option. Thanks for your help.
