I do not remember if it was gettext or libiconv but I know that there was a port where I had explicitly to install emacs to get through the configuration process and to get a full featured port. Without emacs imstalled, certain features were not build. May be perl was another candidate that checked for emacs but I do not remember. Anyway, whenever the configuration process stopt or complained about missing emacs, I have installed it. Thus I have downloaded it every time that a new port had been made available. For porting purposes, it continues to be of use to me; although I certainly do not use it as editor any more as I used it the 90. Regards, Juan M. Guerrero
