I sure hope so, because the longer I think about this, the more certain I am it's not just weird: it's _wrong_, and it has been wrong all this time. If that line ever worked as (probably) intended, that either a) just so happened, by triggering bug in gas that remained undiscovered all this time, or b) was achieved on purpose, by way of some trick that people since forgot about, and which is no longer present in the build environment, or was broken because that trick, too, relied on buggy behaviour. E.g. someone might have wanted to make the assembly sources usable on SVR4 'as' (see "info gas machine i386 i386-options"), by defining '/' to expand to ' '.
