Hold on there.  Are you sure that you're supposed to look at I/O port
0x408 for this information, rather than memory address 0x0408?  I somewhat
doubt that can be the case.

And this supports my idea.  40:0008 is not a way anybody would refer
to a port address.  

The function you're searching for is one of the dosmemget* functions.
