Pardon the French, but that's utter nonsense.  His version of the code
at least compiled, yours doesn't.  Now, if you had made the variable
'list' a struct instead of a pointer, you would have solved that part
of his problem, but not the real one, which is that the OP doesn't
understand about initializing pointers to point to something that
exists.
