Oh, I can certainly manage this - I've found a couple of very good sources for learning some of the "non-obvious" stuff. I've been overwhelmed with other stuff I've had to get done, so I haven't gotten back to this yet - and first, I'm going to try what Andrew Cottrell suggested - i.e., making sure that I'm running only the right versions of everything!
