Windows XP doesn't allow free access to the PC's hardware like DOS did, so any program that does direct screen I/O or fiddles with VGA registers will not work. Time to upgrade to more modern utilities, I think. I suggest Emacs as the editor; it could also replace most, if not all, of your other utilities, as the number of features built into Emacs is huge.
