Your expectations of what a DOS-targetted environment like DJGPP can,
and what it simply can't do.  mmap() is about as impossible to
implement without direct support by the OS as it gets.  And neither
DOS itself nor DPMI support it at all, as far as I'm aware.  The
Windows 32-bit API may, but that's an entirely unrelated piece of
cake.
