Oops, don't know what I was thinking - cpp is the preprocessor, not gpp. I have no idea why gpp didn't work, but I do know that gxx works fine. Apparently something about the -pg option is causing a problem, and only when you use gpp. Someone wiser than me will have to explain what's going on. But I did give you the solution.
