If Binutils still fails then try a simpler package to build like Bash and see if it fails (Find and Grep may need mods to the batch files in order to build). Are you running on Win 2K or XP? If yes then you may need to re-build some of the required packages if they are not dated this year or get you could try the bleeding edge 2.04 CVS pacakges available from the following page when you follow the links.
