Miller To: djgpp AT delorie DOT com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Windows AOL sub 125 Reply-To: djgpp AT delorie DOT com Hello .......from Victor L. Miller I have used DJGPP and ALLEGRO very successfully with Windows 95 / 98 in the DOS box ..... Now I am trying to use it under WindowsNT (forced onto it at work) ..... I have just read your WindowsNT section in your DJGPP FAQ's ..... I wanted to give you direct feedback on my experiences...... Everything you have in your FAQ's is right ..... I did not have the selector limitation ...but I did find that RHIDE needed the -M switch (which can be permanently set with the RHIDEOPT= -M in the DJGPP.env file .....(avoids typing the -M every time) I found that DJGPP works under WindowsNT and can compile with ALLEGRO and build a full *.exe executable ....... HOWEVER ....... Allegro can NOT invoke any good graphics modes set_gfx_mode( ); I could only get 320 x 200 x 8 bits (256 colors) Basically , If you want to create an application with any graphics content (certainly all games / simulations etc) effectively ALLEGRO doesn't work under Windows NT ...... I mean what good is pixel-ated 320 x 200 stuff ? In your FAQ's it is mentioned that WindowsNT doesn't allow arbitrary direct access to the SVGA registers, ...... My question is : Is this operating system design / behavior expected to be seen in all subsequent Microsoft operating systems such as Windows2000 .... ? The reason I ask is that although WindowsNT is not "mainstream" for the home user (mostly just big businesses) if this type of non-support of SVGA gets included in the home user type of operating system that will really put a damper on the game programmers ....using .... DJGPP and ALLEGRO ....... because the SVGA modes won't be accessible ..... Do you guys have any thoughts about this and maybe a plan to address this ? I would appreciate any responses in relation to this issue .... Many Thanks, Victor L. Miller vicmiller1 AT aol DOT com victor DOT miller AT lmco DOT com
