Programming in Dos means rather fixing some concrete hardware or programming task and in Dos-programming talking about future compatibility isn't important at all because Dos isn't very commercial platform today and is absolutely uncompatible with Windows or Linux. Dos programs are more useful for embedded systems where you simple can't install Windows or Linux.
