Whenever someone asks if the GNU compilers are any good, someone will inevitably say (scream is too loud a word) that it's hallmark feature is that Quake was compiled with it. That's sort of like saying that a soft drink is the best just because some major athlete endorsed it. Big deal. The best evidence that the compilers are good is that many people use them (them being *true* GCC and its myriad of ports), and that you hardly, if ever, hear someone complaining about GCC. For years people have (and continue to) complained about Borland and Microsoft's compilers, but you (well, me at least) never hear that level of complaint about GCC. That speaks for the quality of the compiler right there. [ from a seperate follow-up ] >GCC development team didn't consider x86 and interesting platform until >Linux came and gained popularity. Hrm... I thought that GCC's first major use was on the Linx86 platform... what was GCC originally targetted on? AndrewJ
