GNU Tar features various extensions to standard Tar features, including built-in compression and decompression of .tar.gz files (you will need the ported Gzip for this feature). This release is based on a beta version of Tar. There's actually a sad story behind this: GNU Tar changed its maintainer, and the new maintainer forked the current sources from stock Tar 1.12, where all the DJGPP-related changes are not present. Version 1.12a was the last one released by the previous maintainer, where almost all the changes required to support DJGPP were integrated into the official release. The new maintainer promised to retrofit all my changes into the next release, but this next release seems to be far away. OTOH, version 1.12a is working for me for more than a year, and has several bugs fixed. So I think releasing it is the Right Thing (tm). The most significant user-level change in this release is that Tar now supports symlink extraction correctly (by copying). There are also several bug-fixes and improvements not specific to DJGPP; see the file NEWS in the distribution for details. Please direct any further discussions about this port to comp.os.msdos.djgpp news group (or write to its e-mail gateway djgpp AT delorie DOT com).
