Since you don't quote the messages to which you are replying, it is
hard to know what ``both'' did you tried, to no avail.

I suggest to post the *complete* code of the shortest test program you
can come up with, which still crashes/hangs in the way you described,
even though it incorporates all the suggestions you got from this
group.  Then someone might be able to compile the program and see
what's wrong with it.

When/if you do post the program, please also tell what was the command
line you used to compile and link it on your machine.
