You are probably editing it with some editor that doesn't support Unix-style text files where every line ends in a single LF characters (as opposed to DOS-style CR/LF pair). One such editor is Notepad, and it indeed shows the LF characters as a black rectangle. If so, this is normal. As for the real problem, make sure you didn't put any extra blanks when you edited DJGPP.ENV.
