I run Win98/2. My approach is to boot the machine as clean as possible and then have shortcuts pointing to batch files that set up the environment and open a shell for me to work from. The same idea should work for an IDE. Each shell has it's own environment space, so I can run multiple instances/ multiple tools concurrently. Similar tricks are often needed for running apps built with such tools. I used to run WinNT. The shortcut/ shell idea still applies, but I seem to recall setting the environment via a tab on the shortcut's properties sheet. Under DOS (and Win16?), I think there is only one environment. So, you'd have to run the tools one at a time, saving/ restoring the environment along the way. For tougher problems, starting around DOS 5.0 (?) you can use conditional execution commands in your config.sys and autoexec.bat files to boot/ reboot the system in different configurations (memory management of TSR's -- useful for games and specific apps that need a lot of conventional/ low memory).
