Building Allegro 3.9.22 takes three and a half minutes on a p500, but I was developing on a 486 DX33 up until version 2.2, and I remember the 2.1 version was taking around 15 to 20 minutes for a complete rebuild. The library has grown dramatically since then, and now contains over 60 support programs (tests, examples, etc), wheras there was only one test.exe and no example programs in that old version, so although I don't have a 486 any more to test this, an hour doesn't seem at all unreasonable.
