JPG is a good format in its own right, but it doesn't really fit as a replacement for GIF. If there's a single 'optimal' replacement for GIF, then PNG (or it's proposed successor, MNG) is it: * paletted images are possible * packs even better than GIF * as free as can be * major WWW browsers support it The only drawback I know: no animated PNG, yet.
