g77 itself has not exactly grown from f2c. Only its runtime library,
libg2c, has.  Originally, g77 shipped with no runtime at all, telling
you to get the libf2c from the regular f2c distribution and use that.
At least that's what I remember it to have been like.

Later on, they started using a modified libf2c, so they renamed it to
'libg2c' to avoid conflicts, in case someone wanted to use both g77
and f2c on the same system.
