I am out of my depth here, but I recently did a partial port of the gnu Midnight Commander file manager to DOS. This had originally used curses, but the current project has switched to S-Lang, and the comments in the code indicate they feel curses to be less suitable. I used Slang, as the Slang distribution contains the makefiles to build a lib specifically for djgpp and I'm lazy. There are a number of widgets in the MC code, but they are not set up specifically as a separate library. You might find something of interest at the gnome.org page.
