As a last resort before you decide the VDS way is not a solution, I suggest to post here a short program that tries to allocate such a buffer and fails on your machine. Maybe there are ways to solve this problem, and maybe somebody here will see that way. Also, please report the versions of DOS, EMM386 and QEMM you were using in your testing.
