After each write, fflush to make sure it is written to disk. After the crash, the information is in the file, although your editor might make some remarks about unterminated files. I stress 'luck'. There is no guarantee a file that has not been properly closed will be of any use. Perhaps a more reliable solution would be to write the info to the printer or an external dumb terminal.
