It sounds like you're using a dial-up link. Is this the case? libsocket hasn't been tested by me with dial-up links until now, so the code in the current version is full of bugs. I hope to fix that soon. Sorry about the inconvenience. BTW does the library work OK if you use IP addresses rather than hostnames? resit definitely works OK on my machine on a LAN. If you know your DNS IP address, you could try using netsetup to create configuration files.
