Last night I reinstalled EMACS and have been working with it (till 2:00 am)
and then most of today.
EMACS works very well with BASH either with command.com or as a stand-alone
shell. There seems to
be no memory problem at all.

After a second look I really like EMACS. You are right--you can do just
about anything you want.
I do miss colored syntax highlighting, though.
