So, in case it's of any use to anyone, here's a I'd love to know it too. However there is nothing that I could find in the Freetype docs or examples that tells how high and low a character has to be so as not to cutt off accents and descenders. I just chose some values that worked with the fonts that I had tried. It looks similar to the output of the Windows TTF2PCX, which use some windows functions that (I assume) are sensibly set.
