Please describe the details (how exactly did it ``nuke the DOS
box'').  A snapshot of the screen after crash would be nice.  (I'd
advise to "mode con lines=50" before running "make install", so the
info doesn't scroll off the screen so fast.)

I don't have gcc 2.8.1 installed, but maybe I can help you find the
problem if I know the details.
