which one is the typo??
` - ' on the command-line usually means: 'get input from stdin' and
you will get errors and won't get rules.o.
1) Some other things. Avoid ` : ' while it gave errors in a old version
   of make.
2) Try to add the dependency rule (altough I don't think it should
   make a difference):
rules.o: rules.cc
