Did you try Linux ? IMHO, if you want to write in C serious robust programms UNIX is the only possible choice. Moreover, LINUX has _MUCH_ more free stuff then Win. Just spend a month or two of your time playing with Linux box and you'll understand weak and ugly nature of all MS software. With my best wishes. PS.
