Gosh! That this would be such a big problem! I think I'll go for a solution where the user gives which controller and which disk to spin down, thereby bypassing all these problems. In Linux if you use this functionality you know that, so this will mirror the Linux functionality. Right, MartinS include windows.h? I believe the example you copied out (Your first program section), doesn't tell you to include windows.h but in most cases, for building Win programs, you'll have to include it.
