I was too hasty in my post. Apparently, the delays are not consistent. They disappeared temporarily after I mucked around with the memory settings, but returned a short while later. For what its worth, I also have significant delays when I run the command "enscript --help". I've even had it apparently lock up. There may be some connection with system load. I don't know.
