Well, you can use TTF fonts, but not directly. There is a utility called TTF2PCX, which turns a font into a .PCX file containing the characters. You can then use this PCX file as a font in your program as a font. Check out Allegro's site for TTF2PCX, as well as read the Allegro documentation on how to use PCX fonts.
