Maybe start with a program that does nothing at all, simply return 0. Then, do some integer stuff, maybe try writing to a file. Also, it could be you need the NPX emulator. If I remember correctly, the startup code does a few things to check if a x87 is available, and otherwise tries to load the emulator.
