You might hear advice that will allow you to free more RAM that way. I don't remember the details, but search the DJGPP mail archives: somebody posted the info here a few months ago. For DOS, I recommend SRDisk. It's resizable (i.e., you can change its size without rebooting). SimTel.NET:/pub/simtelnet/msdos/ramdisk/srdskNNN.zip.
