You might take a look at Allegro, which is a very good (and swapware) general game programming library, as I hope you can deduce from half the posts here. :) If you want to avoid the library and do it yourself, there are more graphics links and examples on the web than I could browse in a year, especially VGA mode tutorials (try Denthor's famous VGA trainers). Try x2ftp as well. You'll find more than you'll know what to do with.
