Not that I want to run down GCC, but while we found a few years ago that GCC was as fast or faster than the vendor's compiler, it is no longer the case on Digital UNIX, HP, Solaris (SPARC), or any of the Pentium platforms. In some case we're talking staggering differences (like twice as slow).
