Ah!  Now I understand your reluctance concerning Knuth.  Knuth *is* a
tough out-loud read, even for someone who understands the text.  I
also don't know of anything but ink-print versions of his books.  The
one on Sorting and Searching would be particularly hard to read out
loud, due to the many explanatory diagrams of various sorting
techniques.  That one also has the b*tree section I mentioned, though.

I did a search, and there is at least one version of MIX available on
the net:

There is a README file and mix.tar.Z, both dated May 25, 1994.  WinZip
was able to handle uncompressing and detarring the file with no
problems on my Win95 box.
