What I normally do is use a 3d editing program to make my object, then I use Meddle (a quake MDL viewer/processor, URL : http://www.phyast.pitt.edu/~brian/meddle/) to convert the file into .raw format (raw 3d data in text), then I use raw2c3d to convert the raw into the format I made for my 3d engine. I think there are notes on raw files in the Meddle docs, if not you can email me (to keep unrelated stuff out of the NG) and I can probably help some more.
