But you can to get the sources for binutils 2.7 for DJGPP (bnu27s.zip) make your improvements there, because these sources are already configured and can be compiled without bash (but still need some utilities like sed and so on). But here I would say, that downloading the needed tools to configure and make binutils 2.8.1 is the better way because the size of bnu27s.zip is not much smaller than the size of all the needed tools to download. And at last, if you have made this function work much faster please send your patches to the binutils maintainer so they will be included in the next release.
