Of course, if you really want to use all that platform dependent compilers (not gcc) you have to live with the limitations which come with these compilers. But if you switch to use only gcc, the only compiler which runs on so many platforms (including that platforms where also the other compilers run), you can use the configure script and anything is configured for you automatically.
