About a year ago, I had to live with a video card which wasn't supported
by XFree86, a state of affairs which lasted for about a month.  I became
very familiar with `screen' and Emacs during this time, and found the
whole experience rather liberating.

There was only one thing I missed about not being able to run X: I
couldn't preview my TeX documents.
