Why not try using Plush or some other 3D engine that works under DJGPP... it'd probably be faster than DirectX (If you haven't heard, DirectX is actually pretty slow... up to 15fps slower than typical techniques... atleast that's how much slower the new Wing Commander is when using DirectX).
