I can use them fine from a clean DOS boot though. It only happens with djgpp programs such as Allegro's test program, my graphics code, and some others. Quake and other VESA 2.0 programs work fine. I can use VESA 1.2, and ModeX and VGA modes fine, with almost any lib. The crashes sometimes lock the whole system up, or will just mess the system palette or video modes up, causing me to reboot, or deal with ugly screens.
