There's a VGA register that can be used to toggle grey-scaling at the hardware level. I can't remember exactly which register it is, but I'm pretty sure I got the info from VGADOC. It works quite nicely, and I'm pretty sure you do end up with 256 distinct shades of grey. This may not work with SVGA modes, however, and I'm not sure what effects it will have on Allegro, JLIB or whatever.
