The reason is, that a .wav file contains the digital representations of the original sounds, whereas the midi file is more like the score - it contains what notes, lengths, attacks, decays etc... the music should have, but not what they should sound like e.g. a .wav file will sound (almost) identical on all sound cards, but a midi file won't.
