Ha! Emacs shouldn't take more than 6 hours to learn, especially if you have some experience with another serious editor. There's a tutorial that will get you through the basics in, say, 1/2 an hour, and then the menu bar, the mouse and the help system will do the rest. Of course, if you want to be an Emacs *expert*, that will take some more time. But to edit a Makefile, you don't need to be an expert, and Emacs will even syntax-highlight a Makefile for you!
