I got 1.6GB HD and when I use dir /s /a it says 900MB used and 100MB free (600MB missing) but chkdsk reports 1.5GB used. I think what could be the case is that small files take much more space that their real size is and if you have a lot of small files (I got 32K files on my disk) dir reports the actual size of all files not how much space they are taking, at least I think so.
