Would some kind and patient soul enlighten me as to the preferred
method for fast access to text (character + attribute) screens.   I'm
sure this has been discussed ad nauseam, but I couldn't get reliable
list service for nearly a year :-(

I'm in the process of porting from BCC, and there is a just
perceptible latency in painting the screen with menus when, using
assembler routines and direct access to video memory, they used to
flash up apparently instantly.
