I'm trying to port mkid to gcc..

I seem to be having grief with the O_TEXT/O_BINARY nonsense...

__setmode:
        movb    $8,%al
        jmp     turbo_assist

What actually is this doing?

Does DOS care out O_TEXT/O_BINARY?? Or is in within the application space?
