Surprised me a little, what with Alan's post not being clear about whether it's documented or not. 'Specially since I run 4DOS. Then I tried 4DOS's help function, and it says: "Truename sees through default directories, as well as the JOIN and SUBST external commands, and reports the fully qualified pathname of a file. Truename requires MS-DOS or PC-DOS 3.0 or above, DR DOS or Novell DOS 6.0 or above, or OS/2 version 2.0 or above. Truename can handle simple drive substitutions such as those created by JOIN, SUBST, or most network drive mappings. However it may not be able to correctly determine the true name if you use "nested" JOIN or SUBST commands, or a network which does not report true names properly." 4DOS also provides a variable function @TRUENAME which can be used in batch files, etc, but that's probably not relevant to this thread. I don't know if truename does what Eric needs or not, but it looks like a documented, will-be-there-tomorrow, function. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Stephen Turnbull | | University of Tsukuba, Institute of Socio-Economic Planning | | Tennodai 1-chome 1--1, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305 JAPAN | | Phone: +81 (298) 53-5091 Fax: +81 (298) 55-3849 | | Email: turnbull AT shako DOT sk DOT tsukuba DOT ac DOT jp | | | | Founder and CEO, Skinny Boy Associates | | Mechanism Design and Social Engineering | | REAL solutions to REAL problems of REAL people in REAL time!
